HC-One Scores Big With Preceptorship Gold Standard

Just six months into its Nursing Preceptorship Programme, HC-One made history as the first care home provider to be honoured with the prestigious National Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark Award. This recognition is a testament to HC-One’s commitment to excellence, as it met the rigorous requirements of the National Preceptorship Framework Gold Standard for its programs, earning the esteemed designation.

It has set itself apart by establishing a workforce of nurses who embody the qualities of being “competent, confident, and committed,” with the capacity to grow, learn, and reflect. In September 2023, HC-One launched its unique “Nursing Preceptorship Programme,” a pioneering initiative designed to address the industry’s shortages, enhance nurse recruitment and retention, and nurture the development and well-being of newcomers to the nursing community.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recommends a preceptorship period for newly trained nurses and those registering in the UK for the first time. The Council oversees the regulation of nurses and nursing associates in the country. The notion of preceptorship has been deemed more crucial than ever.

The Senior Nursing Team at HC-One created the Gold Standard Preceptorship Programme in compliance with the NMC’s Principles of Preceptorship, the NHS Gold Standard Framework for Preceptorship, and Scotland’s Flying Start Programme.

Through their workshop, which has produced about 60 preceptors, the Nursing Preceptorship Programme at HC-One has already helped about 120 preceptors six months after it began. With four positions available in Scotland and three in England, HC-One will continue to implement the Nursing Preceptorship Programme.

HC-One employs seasoned nurses from regional teams and care facilities as preceptors. These nurses have valued the opportunity to mentor and collaborate closely with preceptors as they advance in their careers. There is no predetermined time frame for the Preceptorship Programme; instead, each Preceptee is supported individually.

All freshly qualified and registered nurses, as well as nursing associates, are expected by HC-One to finish their preceptorship in six to twelve months. To improve their abilities, self-assurance, and practice, supervised students and their preceptor work together through an Individual Learning Plan.

To validate their clinical and leadership competencies, preceptors collaborate with their preceptors before taking on the role of shift leader. A large network of seasoned nurses is available at HC-One to provide guidance and support to newly hired nurses on shifts. This network includes an on-call system.

The top-notch Learning and Development staff at HC-One continues to assist nurses after their preceptorship. By fostering new talent sources, developing their nurses, and enhancing recruitment and retention within the nursing community, HC-One has benefited from the Preceptorship Programme.

The opportunity to gain from competitive beginning salaries and a variety of career pathways for recently qualified nurses has aided this. The Head of Nursing at HC-One highlighted the value of the Nursing Preceptorship course to the career.

In the UK, HC-One is now seeking three newly qualified nurses. Two of the positions are at the Balfarg Care Home and the Woodside Court Care Home in Fife, both operated by HC-One Scotland.

In the report, the CEO of HC-One stated that we are incredibly honoured to have received the National Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark, making us the first care home provider to do so. This demonstrates our Nurses’, regional teams’, and operations teams’ dedication to providing a first-rate preceptorship. These groups have been crucial in the program’s growth and development from its inception, which was only six months ago.

The nursing press of today views preceptorship as being more crucial than ever in ensuring that nurses have the chance to hone their skills and confidence. Through our program, 120 nurses in the program have already received support in becoming preceptors.

The Preceptorship Gold Standard that HC-One has attained is evidence of its commitment to providing its residents with superior care services. The company’s commitment to the development of its staff members is commendable, and it is no surprise that it has achieved such prestigious recognition.
