IELTS/OET Preparation Tips for Nurses Planning to Work Abroad

Communicating in English is essential for nurses planning to work overseas. Each day, they must communicate with patients and families, physicians, and members of the healthcare team. Strong English-speaking abilities enable nurses to provide safe and effective patient care, receive and act upon instructions, and establish trust with their patients.

Internationally, nurse candidates are required by many foreign countries to demonstrate their English language proficiency prior to registration/employment. Many foreign countries accept the IELTS Academic and OET as proof of English proficiency for nursing registration, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Understand IELTS and OET First

The IELTS Academic is a four-part test of English competence: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is a two-hour and forty-five-minute test that is accepted for study, migration, and professional registration by doctors and nurses.

OET is also a four-part assessment of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills designed specifically for the healthcare industry. OET Listening and Reading tests utilise healthcare-related subject matter, while the Writing and Speaking assessments are based on real-world tasks specific to each healthcare professional, including nurses.

Before selecting the IELTS or OET, nurses should ascertain the requirements of their country and their local employers, as well as regulatory boards. Without prior knowledge of the score needed to achieve your goal, you will be unable to prepare for either assessment properly.

Make a Study Plan

Start on your study plan early!  Ideally, begin creating a simple study plan well in advance, then stick to the study plan by studying for 1-2 hours a day on different tasks that include: Listening, reading, Writing and Speaking.

Many nurses possess the skills to do their job clinically but lack the skills to test (taking written tests) & verbalize their knowledge.  Therefore, focus on the area where you are not performing well. Use one mock daily to track your progress.

Improve Listening Skills

Listening is critical to success as a nurse.  As a nurse, you are required to listen to and understand the doctor’s orders, patient questions or concerns and any emergency information.

To develop effective listening skills, consider using English videos and podcasts related to the medical field, as well as practice sessions using the available audio recordings of the exam.  While listening to the audio recordings, write notes.  When writing notes, focus primarily on the main idea, supporting details, numbers and/or instructions.

Practise Reading with Time

As a nurse, you must read under pressure often. The key is to practice reading quickly yet accurately, for example: read published articles on healthcare, patient information or practice exam passages.

When reading quickly, read for content first, and then for detail within the time limits allowed.

Focus on Writing Format

Many nurses are challenged by written skills when writing exams. For example, nurses must write a report & an essay for either an IELTS exam or an OET exam, and nurses create a referral, discharge or transfer letter based on case notes.

When writing for the OET, identify the relevant information that you require prior to writing. Do not copy all of the case notes, and you must always write respectfully, courteously and professionally.

In an IELTS exam, when writing to structure your writing, use an introduction, a summary of the main points and a conclusion with limited paragraphs.

Build Speaking Confidence

Fluency when speaking is not limited to using correct grammar. Confidence, clear communication and being natural are all contributing factors.

Try to practice speaking every day. Listen to your recordings to help you focus on improving your fluency, your pronunciation and your use of clear ideas. When preparing for the OET speaking subtest, you should practice the nurse/patient roleplay. You will be required to ask questions, use empathy, explain how you are providing the care they will be receiving, and provide them with reassurance.

Avoid Common Mistakes

A mistake many candidates make is memorising their answers. This is, in most cases, unnatural as the response is not coming from the students’ thoughts. Instead, you should understand the topic you are discussing and provide your own example.

The second common mistake many students make is to forget to use correct grammar and/or spelling. Even the smallest errors in grammar and/or spelling can affect your grade. Finally, do not take the examination without sufficient practice with your mock tests.
