The Wyong TAFE is contributing significantly to bridging the skills gap on the Central Coast and helping to future-proof the nursing workforce in the area, as noted by the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA).
The urgency of investing in the future of nursing has never been more apparent, as highlighted by the national apex group for nurses. According to APNA, research by Health Workforce Australia paints a concerning picture: an aging workforce and an expanding population could potentially lead to a nationwide shortage of 100,000 nurses by 2025.
According to the CEO, the future generation being trained by Wyong TAFE is a “positive sign for Australia’s health.” In primary care and remote and rural areas, nurses entering the health system must receive excellent training and have the chance to hone their skills in these areas.
The nursing profession is known to be rewarding. It is anticipated that throughout the upcoming years, the vital role that enrolled nurses play in the healthcare system will only expand.
The TAFE NSW campuses throughout the state will receive an investment of $3 million from the NSW Government over the next three years to update their nursing training facilities. Among the several Wyong students who have the hands-on training and professional experience necessary to jumpstart their nursing careers is 38-year-old Benjamin O’Moore.
At Gosford Hospital, he works as a health care assistant while pursuing a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. He intends to apply for a Diploma in Nursing later this year, joining the increasing number of Australian males who are pursuing careers in nursing.

He continued to say that being an older student has been helpful since it has assisted with the communication and negotiation skills needed to provide patient care, especially for those with cognitive limitations. TAFE NSW emphasizes the value of treating patients with dignity and attending to those in need.
Even though becoming a nurse is labor-intensive, the profession is extremely fulfilling. He further stated that he intends to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing degree and enter executive administration after earning his diploma to impact the lives of nurses truly.
According to the APNA, the Central Coast’s main employment industry is health and social support, with a workforce expected to rise by over 16 percent over the next five years until 2026. This employment data comes from Economy ID.
TAFE NSW Nursing Lead Doctor stated that the college collaborated closely with APRA and other health providers to ensure it was keeping up with workforce demands.
He further stated that they convene with all of their industry partners on a regular basis to develop fresh and creative approaches to retaining students in communities and maintaining a steady stream of new nurses. The epidemic once again highlighted the critical role that nurses play in the healthcare system, and TAFE NSW is dedicated to preparing the next generation of nurses.
