Saudi Arabia Sees a 23% Jump in Nurses From 2017 to 2024

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialisations reported a significant increase in the number of registered nurses in Saudi Arabia. In 2023, the country had over 235,000 nurses, marking a 23% increase from 2016. This data, shared by the Ministry of Health on International Nurses Day, underscores the substantial growth of the nursing profession in the country.

In Saudi Arabia’s health sector, there were 235,461 registered and categorized nurses overall in 2023. A 2018 Ministry of Health study revealed that the nursing workforce was truly global, with 70,319 of the 184,565 registered nurses worldwide being Saudi citizens. The majority of approximately 70% of foreign-born nurses were from India, the Philippines, and Malaysia, highlighting the country’s openness to international healthcare professionals and their significant contribution to the growth of the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia.

According to the most recent statistics, nearly 15,000 nurses are employed by other government agencies, compared to over 106,000 by the Ministry of Health. The number of nurses in the health sector has increased to 235,461, with a rise of 67,000 for both male and female private-sector nurses.
