Pennsylvania has recently taken a step forward in combating the shortage of nurses by opening its doors to multistate licensed nurses. This move aims to provide more opportunities for qualified nurses worldwide to work in Pennsylvania, where the demand for healthcare professionals is high.
The state has long struggled with a nursing shortage, but this action will likely significantly ease that situation. With this new policy, nurses from other states, with a multistate license, can practice in Pennsylvania without needing additional licensure.
By allowing nurses with multistate licenses issued by 40 other states and territories to practice in Pennsylvania, it is predicted that this state is taking the first step towards putting the Nurse Licensure Compact into action.
If you have a license through the Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), you are eligible to work as an RN (registered nurse) or an LPN (licensed practical nurse) in Pennsylvania. Department of State officials said this important move improves patient access to healthcare throughout the Commonwealth and addresses Pennsylvania’s acute nursing shortage.
A multistate license obtained through the NLC allowed RNs and LPNs to work in the state starting September 5. Nurses whose licenses have been granted to compact members are recognized by a contract between 41 states and territories, known as the National Licensure Compact (NLC), overseen by the National Council for State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
Act 68 of 2021 permitted Pennsylvania to join the NLC to improve patient access to in-person and virtual care. According to Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, the Shapiro Administration ensures that Pennsylvanians receive top-notch care from qualified, licensed healthcare providers.
Furthermore, it was stated that they are increasing patient options and giving hospitals and health systems access to a vetted, approved pool of licensed RNs and LPNs by implementing this first phase of Pennsylvania’s participation in the NLC.

The 2,400 licenses, permits, and certificates that the Commonwealth issues were listed in an executive order that Governor Josh Shapiro signed in his first month in office. It also established deadlines for each of them.
On the DOH website, facilities with permits from the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) can discover instructions on hiring nurses with MSLs through the compact.
In conclusion, the recent decision by Pennsylvania to allow multi state licensed nurses to practice in the state is a positive step towards addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals. It not only provides opportunities for qualified nurses from other states to contribute to the healthcare system in Pennsylvania, but it also ensures that patients have access to the care they need.
By opening its doors to multistate licensed nurses, Pennsylvania is demonstrating its commitment to the health and well-being of its residents.
