UK Visa Rules Change: What You Need to Know?

A major front in the anticipated general election of next year is the British government’s beleaguered Conservative Party, which on 4th December, 2023, proposed a slew of policies intended to clamp down on the country’s record levels of immigration.

In addition to forbidding foreign health and social care professionals from entering the nation with their dependents, the UK announced that it will increase the minimum wage needed to obtain a skilled worker visa.

Proposals for “the biggest clampdown on legal migration ever” were hailed by the office of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Yet, detractors claimed it would harm the government-run National Health Service (NHS), which is now experiencing a staffing deficit.

Ever since figures from last month’s release revealed that net migration to Britain peaked in 2022, Sunak has been under pressure to curtail fresh arrivals. 745,000 more individuals entered Britain last year than departed, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

300,000 fewer immigrants would enter the UK in the upcoming years, according to Interior Minister James Cleverly’s plan. Declaring that “enough is enough,” the home secretary presented his plans to the legislature. They will go into effect at the beginning of next year.

Effectively stated that in order to obtain a UK visa, experienced foreign workers would need to make £38,700 ($48,860), which is equivalent to the median full-time pay, as opposed to £26,200. While it did not forbid health and social care personnel from bringing family members, it did exclude them.

A group representing hospital groups in England, NHS Providers, described as “deeply concerning” any measures that could discourage care workers from entering the UK. Immigration, according to Care England, an organization that advocates for independent adult social care providers, has been “saving the social care sector.” Brexit has put a strain on staff shortages.

Deftly reinforced limitations on international students bringing dependents and increased the minimum income required for family visas to £38,700. He reiterated Britain’s intention to raise the 66 percent fee, to £1,035, that migrants must pay in order to use the NHS.

Because migrant workers also have to pay National Insurance premiums, which go towards paying for healthcare, critics claim that this essentially places a double tax on them. He added that the “shortage occupation list,” which lists jobs for which businesses cannot locate enough British workers, would be reformed by the government with a clever flourish.

In conclusion, the UK government’s recent crackdown on migration policies has caused concern among healthcare professionals and organizations. The healthcare sector relies heavily on skilled workers from abroad, and any restrictions on migration could have a significant impact on the quality of care provided to patients.

It is essential to recognize the contributions of healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and support staff, who play a crucial role in our society. The government must ensure that any changes to migration policies do not hinder the recruitment of skilled healthcare workers from abroad.

Important Update: Please note that the recent changes to UK immigration visa rules are specifically applicable to the private sector only. The National Health Service (NHS) is exempt from these modifications. This includes the cap on dependent visas and a raise in healthcare worker salaries. Readers must be aware that these rule changes do not impact NHS employees.
