Nurses Shortage in Malaysia to Worsen by 60% in Coming Years

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, in a reassuring statement, projected a 60% deficit of nurses in hospitals by 2030. He emphasized that this challenge can be effectively tackled through a collaborative approach between the public and private sectors, instilling a sense of hope in the audience.

He further underscored the importance of nursing staff in healthcare, stating that they are the backbone of the system. He pledged his full support to any private sector effort aimed at building human resources, emphasizing that while hospitals can be constructed with bricks and mortar, it is the staff that truly makes a difference.

Following the 624-bed KL International Hospital Sdn Bhd hospital’s opening today at the KL Wellness City Gallery Bukit Jalil, he declared that they are experiencing an acute shortage of nurses.

At the occasion, he saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding for nursing scholarships, which offered RM25 million in sponsorship for nursing education in Malaysia between KL Wellness City and six colleges and universities.

Oriental Nilam College, Adventist College of Nursing & Health Sciences, MAIWP International University College, International Medical College, and International Medical University are the institutes involved.
