The shortage of nurses has caused the European Union to become worse due to high demand and system-related issues. According to recent estimates by WHO, there will be a shortage of 18 million healthcare practitioners by 2030, including nurses. At present, the nursing workforce is young within the EU, and the number of young employees is decreasing year by year. These changes are, therefore, exerting more pressure on already strained healthcare providers, especially since nurses continue to work long hours, with the high patient-to-staff ratios and high levels of burnout following the COVID-19 pandemic.
To combat this crisis, starting on 17 January 2025, in Warsaw, WHO/Europe, together with the support of the European Commission and the Polish Presidency of the EU, has implemented the Nursing Action project. This recently launched scheme will seek to adopt research-informed strategies in order to improve nurse retention and recruitment in the EU. This effort will also concentrate on an improved image of the profession in younger individuals as well as improvements in the health and quality of life of nurses. There will be a dedicated focus on exploring the integration of innovative technological materials into practice.

The “Nursing Action” project will last 36 months and encompass major areas, including extending Mentorship, higher education for staff-to-patient ratios, and legislation against “nurse burning out.” This project focuses on maintaining an adequate, sustainable, and future-proof EU nursing workforce that can respond to the increasing need for healthcare in the future.
