Analyzing the Nursing Shortage in 2024

The nursing profession is about to undergo a major change as we approach 2024. Even with burnout and workforce shortages remaining as part of the challenge, tremendous opportunities exist to make for a brighter future for nurses and improve the quality of patient care.

Growing Need for Nurses

With additional growth of the population and an increased healthcare demand, 177,400 more Registered Nurses will be needed between the years 2023 and 2032, while total RN employment is projected to increase from 3,172,500 to 3,349,900. Such increased needs make your contribution to healthcare and the importance of your specialty more important.

The Aging Workforce and Patient Population

What adds further complexity to the nursing shortage is demographic shift. Many nurses have years of experience and will reach retirement age in the very near future, combined with a greater number of older patients who are typically more in need of health services. This is an excellent opportunity for new nurses to step forward and fill leadership positions so that this health system may evolve further. Your expertise and commitment will be pivotal in addressing these growing needs.

Historical Perspective and Development

While this existing nursing shortage is a dire situation, it is important to note the change in this issue over the period. Now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation has worsened in comparison. However, improvement will be visible as 47.8% of hospitals have vacancy rates of more than 10% as of 2024. Earlier in 2022, the vacancy rate had also been high at 81.3%. Hence, this change was again represented as a sign of the strength of the nursing force as well as an attachment of the healthcare community to facing challenges within the workforce.

Looking Ahead: Opportunities for Growth

The future will bring obstacles, but it will also bring tremendous growth opportunities. Although the worst shortages are expected to occur by 2036, even now, steps can be taken to ensure a viable nursing workforce for years to come. Teachers, educators, and nurse leaders who promote mentorship programs, continuing education, and potential improvements in working conditions can promote an environment of support for all nurses.

Support for Early-Career Nurses

Of great concern is the high dropout rate in years one to five for nurses. Many newly licensed nurses suffer from feelings of isolation, intimidation, or a myriad of other circumstances that send them out the door before they really need to go. Good onboarding and mentorship programs by any healthcare organization will get you through those early years. A fit and healthy nurse is essential to a sustainable, vibrant nursing workforce.
