The 2025 Physician Workforce Crisis: An International Perspective

Greater demand comes mainly from two things: an expanding population and a rapidly growing number of older people. Individuals over the age of 65 usually need more regular medical care. A third of doctors working today are over 55, showing there may be a major group of retirements in the future. Because primary care physicians are rarely available after hours, patients visit emergency rooms where the services are already overloaded, showing the current shortfall.

As many as 46,000 to 90,000 more physicians will be sought in the United States by 2025, and that figure could exceed 100,000 by 2030. All areas are short on specialists, like primary care, medical specialists, surgical specialists, and other specialties. Experts believe that making more use of APRNs, adding more retail clinics, letting physicians retire later, and better methods for delivering care will only partially fix the problem.

Reaching better health outcomes would not be possible without the influence of primary care physicians. Many studies consistently show that having access to more primary care doctors leads to better general health, longer lives, healthier self-perception, and decreased risk of death from different conditions. It has been clear for many years as a relationship. Previously, not realizing the importance of primary care physicians made their shortage seem normal. We should tackle this problem with a variety of approaches, working together. Since educating a new physician takes a decade or more, a single solution is not enough. We should adopt new healthcare models that make use of technology and encourage health staff to cooperate better. It is essential to enhance funding and strategy for how training happens for medical residents.
