The Bureau of Labour Statistics stated that between 2022 and 2032, demand will increase by 6%. This comes out to have more than 193,000 job openings annually. Students are required to enter the sector and fill these positions, more nursing schools will need to provide them with training.

The American Nurses Association has issued a warning over a nursing shortage in addition to the rising demand for nurses. The AACN reports a median age of 46 for this profession. Furthermore, more than 25% of registered nurses intend to retire or leave the field within the next five years. The need for healthcare workers is still growing as more and more nurses leave the field. As a result, the future is expected to witness a high demand for nurses.

In total, as of now, there are five states with the highest demand for nurses.  The National Centre for Health Workforce Analysis stated that more than 78,000 RNs will be in short supply nationwide by 2025. The supply of registered nurses varies greatly by geographic region. A shortage of at least 16,180 RNs is anticipated in 2035.

The 2022 nurse workforce forecasts indicate that a number of states may still experience a severe nursing shortage in 2035. The states that are going to experience the most shortfall are Washington with 26%, Georgia with 21%, California with 18%, Oregon with 16% and Michigan with 15% shortfall.
