How many trained medical professionals are working at once is a fine line to balance. Two important things drive it: the quality of graduates from medical schools and how many doctors stay in their profession. Across the world, the number of people seeking medical care is increasing far faster than doctors can be trained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The World Health Organization believes that there are currently 4.3 million fewer doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff than are needed worldwide. Those in developing countries, whose medical education systems are already stretched, experience this problem the worst. In many developed countries, rural and remote areas experience great difficulty recruiting and keeping medical workers, leading many people in these regions to remain underserved.<\/span><\/p>\n

The results of the deficit are serious and happen promptly. They receive a lower level of care, appointments with doctors are rushed, and waiting for an appointment can take much longer. For people in the healthcare field, the extra work can cause them to burn out, feel more stressed, and become more prone to making mistakes. Greater demand comes mainly from two things: an expanding population and a rapidly growing number of older people. Individuals over the age of 65 usually need more regular medical care. A third of doctors working today are over 55, showing there may be a major group of retirements in the future. Because primary care physicians are rarely available after hours, patients visit emergency rooms where the services are already overloaded, showing the current shortfall.<\/span><\/p>\n

As many as 46,000 to 90,000 more physicians will be sought in the United States by 2025, and that figure could exceed 100,000 by 2030. All areas are short on specialists, like primary care, medical specialists, surgical specialists, and other specialties. Experts believe that making more use of APRNs, adding more retail clinics, letting physicians retire later, and better methods for delivering care will only partially fix the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reaching better health outcomes would not be possible without the influence of primary care physicians. Many studies consistently show that having access to more primary care doctors leads to better general health, longer lives, healthier self-perception, and decreased risk of death from different conditions.
