Singapore is known for its excellent healthcare system, but the country is currently facing a special healthcare dilemma. Healthcare spending is running up quickly and could soon be the largest expenditure component for the Government, reaching nearly $30 billion a year, said the Health Minister of Singapore recently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, Singapore will dedicate $20.9 billion to healthcare, after defence spending of $23.4 billion. To give an idea, by 2030, healthcare spending is expected to quadruple from just $9 billion in 2015. Such a dramatic rise is traceable to a blend of factors: the elderly population is growing, the increased need for medical care is in response, and the escalating cost of delivering excellent healthcare is also a factor.<\/span><\/p>\n

A primary cause of the increase is the aging population; the number of people who are above 65 and older living in poverty is on the rise. The older population is not just more liable to disease, but also spends a long time in the hospital. The minister explained that many elderly patients, post-COVID-19, are facing infections that can rapidly escalate into severe situations. This has caused an uplift in the average time patients spend in hospital by 15%, up from 6.1 days back in 2019, to seven days by 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

To meet this increasing demand, the Government is to provide substantial investment in expanding healthcare infrastructure. New hospitals, nursing homes, and community care centres are already planned. A huge chunk of the budget is also dedicated to the workforce, to make sure that there are sufficient doctors, nurses, and healthcare support staff on the ground to handle the increased patient volume.<\/span><\/p>\n

As per the Minister, to ensure that healthcare can once more remain affordable for all, a sizable amount of the budget must continue to be allocated to patient subsidies. There is no compromise on affordability as overall expenditure rises.<\/span><\/p>\n
